Adjudicators...Past and Present

The Greater Hamilton Music Festival has a long history of utilizing adjudicators who posess a great deal of skill and experience. We pride ourselves on always seeking the most appropriate candidates that will support and enhance the festival principles.

James Hibbard

James Hibbard holds and Associate Diploma from the Royal Trinity College; London, England. He studied with Reginald Bedford and has participated in master classes given by Nadia Strycek in Quebec, Norman Shetler, Balint Vazsonyi and John Ogdon at the Institute for Advanced Musical Studies in Switzerland. As part of the Yanchus-Hibbard piano duo, he has studied with Vitya Vronsky; performed extensively; and have been heard several times on CBC Radio’s “Mostly Music” and “Arts National”. They have performed and coached chamber music at the Kincardine Summer Music Festival and are both much in demand as Music Festival adjudicators.

Elaine Hillis

Elaine holds a Senior Certificate in piano performance from the Assoc. Board, London England, and a Senior Certificate in vocal studies from the Assoc. Board, London England. She graduated from Trinity College, Dublin Ireland with an Honours Music degree. She also holds a Teaching Diploma of the Associated Board for The Royal Schools of Music, (dip ABRSM) London, England. Elaine has been a teacher with Ontario Conservatory of Music in Toronto and Mississauga for more than 25 years. At the present time, she is responsible for the selection and training of teachers in the Greater Toronto Area. For many years, Elaine has worked as a Piano and Voice Examiner and Adjudicator throughout the province of Ontario.

Jude Johnson

Jude Johnson is one of Canada’s finest vocalists and performers for both children and adult audiences. Jude has released 7 recordings including “This Heart of Mine”, featuring Carl Horton on piano with guests Jackie Washington, Carlos del Junco, Brian Lee Griffith and string quartet “Panache”. In 1992, Jude was Hamilton’s Special Music Ambassador, as well as Woman of the Year in the Arts. She has received numerous awards for her work in the community as well as her performances at many schools throughout the region. Jude is the founder and director of M.A.D. Creative Arts School which, during the last 14 years, has helped over 4,000 children explore their uniqueness and creativity through music, art and drama. Her “Silly Singin’ and Swingin’ Show” has become a favourite across the province for children of all ages. Jude also provides corporate, college, and university programs with her unique style of motivational concerts which highlight her humour, quick wit and magnificent voice.

Bernard Lawlor

Bernie has been involved in music since his high school years, during which time he performed regularly and began to hone his skills as a teacher. He has continued with his career as a teacher as well as providing teacher training seminars and workshops. Along with his wife Kathy, Bernie has operated the Lawler School of Music since the mid 70’s. At the same time, Mr. Lawler founded the Canadian Music Teacher’s Guild. Bernie has been a highly sought after adjudicator and examiner for a number of festivals and schools throughout his career. Mr. Lawler has retired from the position of Director of the Teaching Department for the Ontario Conservatory of Music.

Stephen J. MacNeil

A graduate of McMaster University with an Honours BA in Music History, Theory and Performance, Stephen has had extensive teaching experience in both classroom and private settings. He has toured extensively throughout the province as a soloist and as an accompanist for a variety of musical venues as well as receiving his diploma in Applied Music from Mohawk College.

Jordan Mendell

Jordan Mendell began playing guitar and bass at the age of nine, studying with long time teacher Rob Evangelista. Following high school, Jordan attended the Mohawk College Jazz studies program and graduated in 2002. After College, Jordan instructed music and performed as a freelance musician in the Hamilton area. Jordan continues to teach and perform with various bands and musicians in the southern Ontario area.

Susan Mander-Powell

Born in Montreal, Susan crossed the Atlantic Ocean many times as a young girl. She began piano lessons at age ten, achieving grade 9 piano in 5 years, began teaching at 15 and has taught ever since. Susan has received her Associate Teaching Diploma before entering the University of Western Ontario, where she studied with Clifford von Kuster. Upon graduating with both her Bachelor of Music and Associate Performer’s Diploma, Susan sailed to London and lived for 5 years where she worked at St. John’s Smith Square Concert Hall and performed Chamber Music Recitals throughout England, Scotland, and Wales. Susan Travelled extensively throughout Europe attending concerts, recitals, plays, opera, and master classes. Susan examines for the Western Conservatory of Music and enjoys adjudicating music festivals between performing in Chamber Music Recitals and trips to Europe.

Dawn Mussellam-Rice

A native of Winnipeg, Dawn is a graduate of Brandon University School of Music where she began her vocal training. She has received many awards in voice, including the Brandon Festival Rose Bowl, Metropolitan Opera National Auditions and, most recently, a Friedrick Schorr Memorial voice competition finalist in Adrian, Michigan. Dawn was a soloist with the Vanemuine Opera in Tartu, Estonia for two years, where she performed 5 major roles as well as performing at a number of concert venues. She was also a guest soloist at the Latvian National Opera in Riga, Latvia. Since her return to Canada, Dawn Mussellam-Rice has performed regularly throughout Southern Ontario and currently maintains a private practice of vocal students in Hamilton, Ontario where she lives with her husband Colin and two sons.

Lou Pelliccotta

Mr. Pelliccotta has studied jazz guitar with Anthony Johnson. Lou began his studies with the Ontario Conservatory of Music in 1969 and has played professionally for many years in and around the Hamilton area, where he maintains a part time teaching program. Mr. Pelliccotta is a C.I.P. and resides with his wife and family in Hamilton.

Tina Yanchus

Tina Yanchus holds Associate and Licentiate Diplomas from the Western Ontario Conservatory, and Bachelor of Music and Master of the Science of Music Degrees from the Juliard School in New York City, where she studied with Jacob Lateiner and Joseph Raieff. As a performer, she has played both in recital and with orchestras in Canada and the United States. As part of the Yanchus-Hibbard piano duo, he has studied with Vitya Vronsky; performed extensively; and have been heard several times on CBC Radio’s “Mostly Music” and “Arts National”. They have performed and coached chamber music at the Kincardine Summer Music Festival and are both much in demand as Music Festival adjudicators.
